Before you get into cipher design, you're going to need to at least be
able to understand what other ciphers are doing. If you do not learn
from their mistakes, you are doomed to repeat them.
Get the Cryptography FAQs, including the Snake Oil FAQ and the RSA
Crypto FAQ, and Applied Cryptography, 2nd Edition.
