Just to provide some stats, my top so far is 2^27 pairs in 1279 seconds on a
fully loaded PowerMac 8100/110 (PPC 601+ at 110Mhz) that serves as a gateway
machine. When I say fully loaded, I mean stuffed to the gills with
processor-eating extensions and control panels.

To put things in perspective, the first Intel DESChall clients were much
slower than the current crop. Hopefully this will change for PPC machines,
especially given their RISC architecture. Also consider that there are a
whole bunch of active processes that have to cooperatively share the
processor (like extensions and other active apps.) Whether or not it needs
it, programs have to poll every so often, give up time, etc. This slows
DESChall by a factor of two when run as as a background app.

Lastly, the current client is optimized (on the PPC side) for 604 processors
Try running it on a machine with a 604 processor and let us know if it's
still that slow.
