stop,reboot,restart unix deschall?

I have to (ahem) do some loser Visual Basic Programming. I keep
rebooting to Win95 (and since my winsock DLL and ICMP.DLL "cannot stat",
it looks like my Win95 TCP is scrooed, so I can do anything TCP
related). Im in a rush, so I cant wait for DESChall to finish its
current space.

Is there anything (Im thinking some general unix software here traditionally
used for this stuff) to "freeze" a running binary and make it start again?
Something a long the lines of coredump, I spose. Perhaps a bit cleaner
procedure? (Would you use gdb and restart?)

Any ideas?

I wont even ask about how to do this on Win95.
