DESgui v1.3 beta Bug?

I decided that I didn't need to keep a log, mainly because I wasn't
particularly thrilled with it writing to my drive every few seconds. I have
a Pentium 200 with 64 Mb so my HD will often go to sleep for 10 minutes at
a time (nice power management).

Anyway, I cleared the check mark in the log box on DESgui. Cycles which
normally take 35-40 minutes now took 60, then 70, then 72. I then turned
the check box back on. No improvement. I didn't have anything else running.
Turned off the system (lost the keys I was working on. What happens to them
anyway? Are they reallocated?) Rebooted...back to normal, 36 minutes when
it got to 2^30. Turned the log back off...60 minutes again. Turned the log
back on...climbed again to 73. Rebooted again...back to normal...and
staying that way.

The only explanation is that turning the log off considerably slows the
client down. Can anyone else confirm this behavior?
